Royal Sphinx, originally founded with the name Petrus Regout in Maastricht in 1834, developed from a local producer of glass and pottery to an internationally renowned manufacturer of mainly sanitary ware and tiles. After the death of founder Petrus Laurentius Regout in 1878, the company continued to grow under the leadership of his descendants and became one of the key players in the Dutch industrial revolution.
The factory, known for its innovative production methods and diverse product range, became a symbol of industrial progress. With the introduction of the brand "Sphinx" and the sphinx as its logo in 1879, the company confirmed its status and quality in the international market. In the 20th century, Sphinx focused more on sanitary ware and tiles, leading to several acquisitions and mergers, including the one with Société Céramique in 1958, resulting in N.V. Sphinx-Céramique.
After obtaining the designation Royal in 1959, the company changed its name to N.V. Koninklijke Sphinx. Production in Maastricht ended in 2010, when owner Sanitec decided to move production operations to Sweden. This led to the loss of more than a hundred jobs. Only the marketing department and a warehouse remained in Maastricht. The brand name "Sphinx" was held by Geberit through 2019.
